Mr. Frankie
Francisco Javier Hernandez Jr. is a 2024 graduate of Northern Arizona University receiving a Bachelors in University Studies with minors in Music and Latin American Studies. At NAU, Francisco was president of the Percussion Society as of Fall 2021, and principal percussionist of the Wind Symphony. As a multi-instrumentalist, Francisco teaches piano and guitar besides drum lessons. He was a member of many other NAU ensembles including: Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Band, Lumberjack Marching Band Drumline, Percussion Ensemble, and the Panorama Steel Band. Francisco is now a full time member of the Banda Latino Caribena de Flagstaff, a very active, student-lead ensemble in Flagstaff.
Francisco's dedication to promoting Latin American music within the community has been evident through his active involvement as a performer and composer over the past three years. With a focus on Mariachi and Son Jarocho music, Francisco’s objective is to represent the vibrant voice of Mexico. Francisco’s pursuit of Latin American representation at NAU has extended the opportunity to perform a solo recital in the NAU Kitt School of music hall in spring 2024. This recital displayed the musical compositions of Brazilian and Mexican composers.
My approach to education is deeply influenced by the world of music, where discipline, creativity, and cultural understanding converge. I believe that music offers students a unique way to connect with both their own identities and the broader cultural landscape. My experiences performing and studying Latin American music have taught me the value of authenticity, inspiring me to create a learning environment that respects each student’s voice while encouraging exploration and technical growth. By teaching music with an emphasis on cultural context and collaboration, I aim to foster an inclusive space where students feel empowered to engage with music not just as a skill, but as a lifelong journey of discovery and expression.
